Environment Canada issued freezing rain warnings and special weather statement for parts of central and northern Alberta —; including Edmonton —; as it warned people to prepare for freezing rain later this week.
As of early Tuesday morning, Environment Canada said an area of freezing rain was moving across north-central Alberta and would continue into the late morning. A freezing rain warning was in effect for the north-western corner of the province, and included the Peace River, Grande Prairie, and Slave Lake regions.
The special weather statement stretched on either side of Edmonton from the B.C. to Saskatchewan borders, and in eastern Alberta it extend as far south as Hanna and Oyen.
Another round of freezing rain is expected to move into western Alberta Tuesday afternoon and may last into Wednesday morning.
“There is still some uncertainty as to the exact timing and location for which regions will see the greatest impact from the freezing rain,” Environment Canada said on its website.

U.S. holiday travellers stranded after snowstorm cancels up to 1,200 flights
Global Edmonton meteorologist Jesse Beyer said “warm and moist Pacific air moving in will bring some less-than-ideal precipitation parameters.”
“With warm and moist conditions aloft, there will be the development of liquid precipitation,” he said, “but below-freezing surface temperatures will lead to freezing rain and icy conditions for some areas, including Edmonton.
“Keep that in mind for any travel plans.”
